Why Choose a Metal Roof?
- Metal roofing requires minimal upkeep. Ensuring your metal roof is free from debris and a once-yearly inspection for minor maintenance items such as cleaning and paint touch ups is typically all that is needed to keep your roof in top shape.
- Metal roofs easily last for decades without any major changes or issues, handling winds up to 150-mph with no problem. In contrast, as asphalt shingles age, they deteriorate, becoming brittle. These older, dried out shingles are easily blown off a roof, sometimes in gusts as mild as 40-mph. Metal roofing systems have wind resistance and uplift resistance that is above the new building code requirement.
- Metal roofing is environmentally friendly. The recycled content of the steel in a metal roof is about 28% and is completely recyclable at the end of its lifespan. In contrast, according to the National Association of Homebuilders Research Center, 20 billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into U.S. landfills every year. If you loaded those shingles into tractor trailers, then lined them up end-to-end, they would make a line from New York City to Los Angeles, back to New York City again, then on to Chicago, that’s a lot of wasted asphalt.

I’m thinking of having a home studio built for my woodcraft work, so I plan on having a detached house built for it sometime later this year. Thanks for letting us know that it’s best to opt for metal roofs since they can easily last decades without any major changes due to their wind and uplift resistance. I’ll be sure to remember this when talking with the roofing contractor I plan on hiring for the installation.
